The Legends 2011
The Legends – born out of a love of football – celebrates its fourth anniversary this year when former players of Arthurlie and Pollok FCs meet at Dunterlie Park on Sunday 4 September 2011, kick off 2pm.
Entry is as follows: adults £4, concessions and children 16-10 £2, under 10′s free of charge. Our traditional charity raffle and auction will take place in the Arthurlie Social Club after the game.
The game is all about raising as much money as we can for the charities we have chosen. This year’s causes can be viewed on the charities page.
Last year we donated to St Vincent’s Hospice in Paisley, The Kangaroo Club in Linwood, Revive MS Support in Maryhill, and Haven in Blantyre. A total of £3000 was handed over to the four groups. We hope with your support we will top that this year and make a difference.
We have the privilege of announcing that Mr Kenny Clark will officiate at this year’s game without a fee, which is a fantastic gesture from a top-class and world renowned ex-senior referee. Kenny will be assisted by Graham Vance and Thomas Stewart, who have also agreed to give their services free of charge.
We also have apologies for this year from players unable to make the game. Jim Murphy MP is regrettably unable to attend in what would have been his fourth Legends match. Another consistent player unable to attend this year is Mr Tommy Sheridan, who has been a great supporter of the match from day one.
The idea of staging the game saw a huge interest, thus we decided to make it charity-based. The winning team will receive the Eric Hickey Shield in memory of one of Barrhead’s finest businessmen who was loved by all. In addition, we now have the John Murphy Man of the Match Award which is presented to the standout player by John’s daughter Lynne.
Last year we introduced a new award which is dedicated to one of the best players to come out of Barrhead, Tommy Sloan. The Tommy Sloan Sportsman’s Award is chosen by the members of Mr Sloan’s family for the player who does something special on the day.
If you have something to donate – big or small – to our charity raffle, please do let us know. If not, simply spread the word, give at the gate, and come along to see some of the greatest players of junior football don their boots once again.
Watch local and national press for more match coverage!
This years event is once again sponsored by COMPASS Cars, Barrhead and we could not stage this match without their support.
